The watchman

Bringing timeless design to life through elegant, scroll-stopping animation.

Created in collaboration with Westwind Pictures, The Watchman follows a lone traveller on a heartfelt journey to find the person he loves—unaware that someone is quietly following in his footsteps.

Produced over just six weeks, the project challenged me to combine 2D and 3D animation in new ways while creating a rich, atmospheric world that supported the emotion of the story. Every creative decision, from the pacing and cinematography to the environments and animation, was guided by one goal: serving the narrative.

It's a project I'm incredibly proud of, not only because of what we created, but because it pushed me creatively and expanded the way I approach storytelling through animation.

Chasing the story

From the first storyboard sketches and animatic through to character design, environment development and final animation, each stage was an opportunity to refine the narrative before bringing it to life.

The setting was inspired by the Italian town of Matera. the environment became far more than a backdrop—it became a character in its own right, helping shape the mood, scale and emotion of the film.

Below is a look behind the scenes at the creative journey—from early concepts to the finished film.

Character Designs

Before the story could unfold, the protagonist first had to come to life.

Through sketches, exploration and refinement, his personality slowly began to emerge, creating a character whose quiet determination could carry the story without saying a single word.

I acknowledge that I live, work and create on the land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.

I pay my respects to their elders, past, present, and emerging, and extend that respect to all First Nations peoples.
